THE WHITE SHIRT EDIT
I’ve been wearing white shirts since I was a teenager, not by choice at first. Like many Aussie kids, I had to wear one every day as part of my school uniform in Sydney. Crisp, stiff-collared, and usually a bit too long in the sleeves, it didn’t feel like fashion back then but looking back, that shirt taught me something about timelessness.
Fast forward a decade or two, and the white button-down is still a core part of my wardrobe but this time, it’s a choice.
Once a symbol of wealth back when only the rich could afford to keep their whites clean, the white shirt has long carried cultural significance. It was later adopted by Hollywood icons like Audrey Hepburn and Katharine Hepburn, who brought a sense of effortless elegance and quiet power to the look. In the 1980s and 90s, it evolved into a staple of power dressing, with sharp tailoring and shoulder pads defining the corporate uniform of the era. Today, the white shirt is constantly being reimagined from minimalist street style to high fashion runways, proving it’s anything but basic.
From school students to CEOs, hospitality staff to haute couture models, the white shirt has spanned generations and social classes.
How I Style Mine:
Classic: Tucked into black tailored trousers with loafers
Weekend: Worn oversized, half-buttoned over bike shorts
Layered: Under a vest, blazer, or even a strappy dress
Edgy: Tied at the waist with a leather skirt
Relaxed: Open over a bikini or tank with denim
